Habitat banks create or enhance species‑rich habitats to increase biodiversity. Developers can purchase biodiversity units from these sites to offset habitat loss, with unit costs varying by habitat type and project location.
As a Responsible Body, Staffordshire Wildlife Trust has a number of habitat banks across the UK where biodiversity has been increased either through the creation of species rich habitats, or by improving the quality of existing habitats. The units created are called biodiversity units. Developers can buy these units to off-set the biodiversity lost on their development site.
